European elections: all the info you need on polling day

22 May 2014

The UK goes to the polls today to elect the 73 MEPs that will represent the country in the European Parliament, as well as councillors in 161 English and Northern Irish local authorities. Full Fact won't be publishing any more European factchecks on polling day, but we have checked out a large number of claims from each of the main parties over the past few months. Those who'd like more information about the facts and figures before they cast their vote can find it all here.

In particular, we've looked this week at what powers the MEPs we elect today will actually have. Want to know the answer? Read our factcheck here.

The Electoral Commission has also produced some information about voting in person. The location of your polling station is printed on the back of your polling card, but can also be found by speaking to the elections office at your local authority. You don't need a polling card to vote, but you must be on the electoral register and will need to give your name and address to the staff at the polling station.

A list of all the prospective MEPs standing is available herePolls will close at 10pm, although the results of the European elections will only begin to be announced from 10pm on Sunday 25th May, which is when the final poll closes in the last country to cast its votes: Italy.
